Leveraging Pioneering Techniques to Build Coastal Resilience in California

Aaron Salyer

Director & Coastal Engineer
International Coastal Management

Aaron is a coastal engineer with 17 years of experience, specialising in innovative projects across the Middle East, large-scale coastal management initiatives in Australia, and unique projects on remote islands. His work emphasises multi-beneficial solutions that integrate engineering, ecology, and user experience to build more resilient coastlines. This year, Aaron led his team to victory in the International Coastal Resilience Design Competition in California. He is now eager to introduce a fresh approach to coastal management in Southern California through the implementation of the Re:Beach project in Oceanside.

Express Course Two

Australia's approach to coastal adaptation planning - understanding the legal landscape

Jan McDonald

Professor of Environmental and Climate Law
Acting Dean of the School of Law at the University of Tasmania.

We are thrilled to welcome Professor Jan McDonald to lead an express course on how environmental law can be harnessed as a critical tool in managing coastal change and increasing coastal resilience. A trailblazer in climate change adaptation law in Australia, Jan will draw from her vast experience, including her role as Establishment Director of the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility, Environment Program Manager for the UN’s Pacific Development Program, and her work with the Biodiversity Council and Tasmanian Land Conservancy. We can’t wait to explore her insights and discuss the next major coastal and climate challenges that environmental law can help address.
